Pickle Factory History

The building itself was built in the early 1900s. At that time it was called “The Pepin Pickling Company” and was owned by Ed Theis and family. Several kinds of pickles and sauerkraut were processed here.

When the building was being remodeled into a restaurant, invoices and correspondence were found dating back to 1904. After the Pickling Company moved to Winona, this building was used for numerous things by a few different owners.

In 1987, Wayne and Carol Nelson and Ralph and Mary Wallin purchased the building with a restaurant/bar in mind. The ceiling is original and they sandblasted the beams. A new roof was put on and the building was insulated. Wayne and Carol sold the business and leased the building from 1992-96. However, it was reopened under their management on August 9, 1996.

The basement or “BOTTOM of the BARREL” was remodeled during the summer of 1997 is open during the weekends during the summer.

In June of 2003, the Nelsons sold the business and building to Bruce “Wally” & Rene Lohman and Roger & Lisa Anderson. They have continued to offer their customers excellent service and great food in a comfortable atmosphere.
